‘….for art must be made secretly, in quiet places ….’
Salman Rushdie in The Ground Beneath her Feet (2000)

Born in  Amsterdam, Elly was  introduced at a very young age to museums  and galleries by her grandfather. Early exposure to such artists as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Miro, van Gogh and Mondriaan developed her passion for painting.

She has lived in Britain for  many years and  initially  studied  painting  and  drawing  at  the  City Literature Institute, London. She subsequently trained in the Practice and Theory of Visual Art, obtaining a BA Honours from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London.

Elly divides her time between a garden studio in Surrey and an isolated work space in rural South West France. As well as pursuing personal concerns in her paintings, she also undertakes commissions and she has created work for private clients both in the UK and abroad. In addition,  Elly has a special interest in making work in response to a particular location, such as the Brixton Lido, or Tentazioni, a trendy restaurant in London’s Docklands area.

Elly is a founder member of the Seam group of artists; the group has shown their work in South London and SW France. She is also a member of ArtQuercy in SW France.
